Where: Old Street, Shoreditch, N1

Who For: SCAPE / INTO University Partnership

What: 18,876 sqm educational floorspace (541 student beds)

Architect: Stephen Marshall

This 0.43 ha site comprised a mix of utilitarian structures occupied for a range of business, light industrial and storage uses along with areas of open yard, just to the north of Old Street.  The proposals comprise two principle elements: a new education / teaching facility; and student living accommodation, in a building going up to 11 storeys in height.  In addition, the scheme includes: a café / restaurant; retail units; and outdoor amenity space in the form of roof terraces and a new area of public open space.

CMA Planning advised on all planning aspects of the proposal, including liaising with both the Council and the GLA, co-ordinating and overseeing the project team, assisting with public consultation, preparing and submitting the application and then carrying out post submission negotiating with Officers.  Following on from this, the proposal was approved by the London Borough of Hackney and the GLA in March 2012.  Approval was then obtained for minor amendments in January 2013.

CMA then secured approval for a change of use of the 6000 sqm of teaching accommodation within the building to office use in 2015, which allowed WeWork to occupy the space.  The scheme was completed in 2015.
