Where: 333 Kingsland Road, E8

Who For: Hackney New Primary School

What: 1734 sqm educational space (up to 350 pupils), 298 sqm retail and 68 flats.

Architect: Henley Halebrown

CMA Planning originally secured permission for Hackney New (Secondary) School in 2013.  Following on from this, the Trust secured a new site for a Primary School (the former Kingsland Fire Station), which would comprise two forms of entry for a total of 350 pupils and would operate as a sister school with a particular focus on music.

The proposal also included 68 flats and a retail unit, located within an 11 storey tower.  Given the prominent location of the site and it's associated land value, this residential element was needed to offset the site cost and to help to deliver the school.  CMA Planning worked with architects Henley Halebrown to secure planning permission in June 2017 from the London Borough of Hackney. Key issues tackled included the loss of the fire station, affordable housing / viability and height / massing of the proposal.

The scheme was completed in 2020.  A review of the scheme by Peter Stewart can be found here - https://www.architecturetoday.co.uk/serious-delight/.  The scheme has also been shortlisted for the 2020 Hackney Design Awards.
